DOMAIN SERVICE NOTICE spam email

by BizTron 13. August 2009 11:48

Has anyone seen this kind of crap in your e-mail recently, or anytime? What a scam!!! Does anyone ever respond to this garbage. If I could make $70 per domain sold, I might think this was a good Idea and then turn around and buy it from GoDaddy. Problem is, EVERYONE should be buying their domains directly from GoDaddy.  Of course, there are those of us who will find a great brand name and buy 5 years worth of every similar domain they can think of, but you still aren’t paying $295.  This kind of scam needs to end.  Make sure to forward it to:

BlogEngine.NET SqlBlogProvider has Post update issue

by BizTron 10. August 2009 06:32

This is what you see when attempting to rate a new post. Click on a Star to rate the post.  Notice the infinitesimally small rating that is generally added when creating a first post.  This may be something I did myself while trying to “fix” the Add a new Blog script.

These are the symptoms I could find so far, but I cannot isolate the DateTime property that is causing the Exception.More...

Twitter attacked via DDoS, API suffers

by BizTron 8. August 2009 01:21

For anyone who recently noticed issues with Twitter on several fronts, you’ll want to read this.  I’m not sure if it’s made the rounds on TV news yet but it answered some questions and caused some concern.  It’s always blissful until someone slams the door in your face, or cut’s you off on the road, flips you off, etc.  No idea why this would happen, but it did.  Now we all need to BOTH find ways of keeping these things from happening, within reason, and to prosecute and slam the door on those idiots who do this for fun, revenge, or terrorism.

App developers stung by Twitter's DOS woes

I received this message from Andrew Badera:

Though I think Computerworld took a slightly more negative spin to my input than my email really conveyed (in) toto, this is a decent look at the Twitter DDoS situation from the perspective of Twitter app developers like myself.

App developers stung by Twitter's DOS woes

Computerworld | August 07, 2009 | 06:04 PM PDT

Developers who built applications for Twitter and generate money from them have been hard-hit by the micro-blogging service's many hours of downtime in the past day, as hackers pummel Twitter with an ongoing denial-of-service attack

Upgrade from SQL Express 2005 to 2008

by BizTron 4. August 2009 00:43

If you have a SQL Express 2005 installation with SQL Management Studio express installed these four commands will do a silent upgrade to 2008.

SQL Server Express

First extract the contents of the SQL Express download into a directory.

        SQLEXPRWT_x86 /EXTRACT
(or whatever .exe you downloaded.)

Install Windows Installer 4.5 and Windows Powershell.

Then remove SQL Tools 2005
        msiexec /quiet /Uninstall {58D379F7-62BC-4748-8237-FE071ECE797C}

Remove Management Studio
        msiexec /quiet /Uninstall {20608BFA-6068-48FE-A410-400F2A124c27}

Ugrade the SQL Engine.
        SETUP.EXE /QUIET /ACTION=upgrade /INSTANCENAME=SQLExpress

Install Management Studio 2008 Express
        SETUP.EXE /QUIET /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=Tools /INSTANCENAME=SQLExpress

SQL BlogEngine.NET and Multi-Blogging

by BizTron 27. July 2009 20:20

Update (10/17/2009)

BlogEngine.NET appears to be closer than ever to a Multi-Blog implementation thanks to work done by Jacob Proffitt found here: Multi-blog Obsession.  The SQLBlogProvider allows multiple blogs to be supported by a single SQL Server database.  Imaging the maintenance and resource requirements, compared with “n” blogs and “n” databases, or “n” folders with “n-times-x” xml files for all those posts.  Currently, this provides for a single folder and any number of application instances, all pointing at the same folder.  There may be a few potential answers to this, but only if someone deems it a problem.  I’m now running about 12 (BlogEngine.NET) blogs in a single location with a single database using the SQLBlogProvider.  A few details were worked out to bring this solution up to the 1.5.x version of BlogEngine.NET.  While looking at this, I’ve learned a lot about some new features and found some useful and straightforward applications of Linq to SQL. 1and1 VPS Hosting and You

by BizTron 27. June 2009 01:04

With all the troubles I’ve had with hosting plans throughout the years, I’ve always wondered how to avoid those same problems for a second time.  Of course, I’d love to avoid them for the first time, so I Google them first.  No, not the problem, but how to avoid problems doing something “odd” with my service.  Let’s say I want to do something really strange like cancel a server or hosting service.  I know, it’s way out there, but please bare with me…I ask the Service Provider what I need to do, after starting with the on-line FAQs, help, forums, etc.  and they say go to this “special” site for canceling service.  OK, it must be “intuitive” or they would have given me more details, right!?  The stand-up comic in me wants to draw this out to its proper conclusion…lots of laughs; but the software developer, architect, infrastructure novice and business owner in me wants to lend a hand.

What Problem was actually resolved?

There are way too many scenarios to list in one sitting, but I can probably link to them from here later, or answer specific questions in comments if I see them.  But my most recent issue was due to the fact that I wanted to upgrade a 1and1.com VPS account to one that was half the price I was paying (for 3 months…and I highly recommend this.)  That wasn’t the deal maker though. Welcome Back to Reality

by BizTron 12. May 2009 16:45

Life is busy, imagine that.

After a wonderful break from a wonderful project, I’m finally sitting in the home office thinking about what to Blog about.  Since BlogEngine.NET 1.5 has been released recently, It’s probably about time to upgrade my sites.  Of course there is also a new MultiBlog approach available, as well.  It’s a separate provider based entirely on SQL Server and Uses Linq.  After another “minor” extension tweek for BlogRolls, the 2 became out of sync.  I help rectify that by creating a stop-gap update for myself that I shared with the original creator.  Since I only tweaked what was already done, I can’t take much credit for the results, but I’m sure I can help if the need arises now that I’ve taken a peak a bit further under the hood.

I’m going to try to get a million things done I’ve been putting off since last Summer, the last time I had any kind of break.  Who wants to help me publish a book???  Next step is to configure my main blog sites to use the new BlogEngine release, with updates, of course, and see if I can nip the maintenance boogeyman in the bud.

Time savings is awesome.  This week I need to install a second doorbell/chime, design a bathroom, clean the garage/prepare for a community garage sale, and spend some more time spectating the kids’ sports.  I’m also going to add a few more virtual dev servers and 2 domain controllers to the office.  Next week, I may wash the car…it’s only been since last fall.
